Bachelors in Jewellery Design and Technology (Level 7)

This three-year degree is to provide high-quality and motivated jewellery manufacturing professionals to meet the growing needs of the New Zealand and International Jewellery trades. 

ABOUT THE COURSE

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN

The aim of this new three-year degree is to provide high-quality and motivated jewellery manufacturing professionals to meet the growing needs of New Zealand and international Jewellery Trades. Roles may include Goldsmith, CAD jewellery designer, bench jeweller, freelance practitioner.

The programme will develop students into professionals that are able to manage all phases of design, from initial inspiration, analysis and development to finishing the final product. Students are encouraged to visit and participate in exhibitions; fashion shows and interacts with senior professionals in the industry.

ENTRY CRITERIA

  • Attend an interview along with a portfolio of 6-12 sketches of jewellery designs; or

  • Undertake an audition

  • Meet the requirements of the New Zealand University Entrance or

  • Demonstrate a minimum of 3 years industry or life experience relevant to Jewellery design and creation, in addition, these applicants must undertake a supervised written assessment to demonstrate numeracy and literacy skills including an essay (500 words) followed by a task on interpreting measurements.

    This course is available only for New Zealand and Australia Residents and Citizens. (Domestic Students)

FEES

Fees: $ 12,000 per annum

SKILLS TAUGHT

  • Practical goldsmithing skills (through comprehensive hand-making, digital and other manufacturing techniques) required in creating fine jewellery.

  • Advanced specialist skills required to develop and generate creative design solutions to manufacture jewellery.

  • Research skills

  • Analysis of a broad range of information to independently select and apply critical thinking in the management of unfamiliar and sometimes complex projects.

  • How to select, adapt and apply a range of professional business acumen relevant to their own practice.

  • Independently manage projects and present their work in a variety of contexts.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

Graduates will be able to apply advanced specialist skills required to develop and generate creative design solutions to manufacture jewellery. They will be able to research and analyse a broad range of information to independently select and apply critical thinking in the management of unfamiliar and sometimes complex projects. Graduates will be able to apply select, adapt and apply a range of professional business acumen relevant to their own practice. They will be able to independently manage projects and present their work in a variety of contexts.

CAREER PATHWAYS

Graduates of this qualification will be able to work in a range of settings such as manufacturing, goldsmithing, jewellery and designer organisations or in a self-employment / freelance practitioner capacity. Roles may include Goldsmith, CAD jewellery designer, bench jeweller, freelance practitioner.

EDUCATION PATHWAY

Graduate of this qualification may pathway into specialists programme at Post Graduate or Masters in Fine Arts in Jewellery/Metal or undertake a Masters in Business Administration post the requisite business experience. 

Methods of Delivery

This programme will be delivered with an integrated mix of directed classroom lectures and practical activities with a focus on building robust theoretical concepts and advanced practical knowledge required for the application of skills. 
The delivery will include working sessions, technical and practical workshops, authentic projects, research activities, group and self-reflection activities.
Guest speakers from the industry and lecturers from other international institutions will be engaged at regular intervals to enable and present learners with current and industry best practices.
In addition, students would be encouraged to visit and participate in exhibitions; fashion shows and interacts with senior professionals in the industry.
